On November 6, 2024, the sixth-grade students at Fairview Elementary School had an out-of-this-world experience as they connected with NASA, Space Force, and Civilian Space employees and presented their own space-themed projects. This unique opportunity allowed young minds to explore the wonders of the universe and gain firsthand insights from experts in the field--which included members of our Fairview community!

The event featured an in-person Q&A session with Dr. Kathleen Boggs: Senior Portfolio Liaison for the Science Mission Directorate, NASA, Major Aaron Summers: Space Force, Lt Col Kassandra Miller: Space Force, Mr. Kevin Metrocavage: NASA ISS Operations Manager , and Mr. Chris Nie: Sierra Space. Students had the chance to ask burning questions about space exploration, rocket science, and the future of space travel. From the intricacies of launching a rocket to the challenges of living in space, the NASA, Space Force, and Civilian Space experts provided informative and inspiring answers. One student asked: "What is an astronauts favorite meal in space?" And the presenters informed them that they have been told that nothing compares to food served here, on earth.

Following the Q&A session, the sixth-grade students showcased their own space-related projects. The students' creativity and passion for space were evident in their presentations, and they eagerly shared their knowledge and ideas with Dr. Kathleen Boggs, Major Aaron Summers, Lt Col Kassandra Miller, Mr. Kevin Metrocavage, and Mr. Chris Nie.

This extraordinary experience not only ignited the students' interest in science, technology, art, engineering, and mathematics (STEAM) but also inspired them to dream big and pursue their aspirations. The presenters shared with the students that they need anyone interested in space to join their field, event artists to help design space suits and user interfaces! By connecting with real-world scientists and engineers, the students gained a deeper understanding of the possibilities that lie ahead in the field of space exploration.

Fairview Elementary School is proud to foster a love of learning and to provide opportunities for students to engage with experts in various fields. This NASA, Space Force, and Civilian Space event is just one example of our school's commitment to inspiring the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Kathleen Boggs, Lt Col Kassandra Miller, Mr. Chris Nie and to community members Major Aaron Summers and Mr. Kevin Metrocavage, for taking the time to visit Fairview Elementary and present to our 6th-grade students. We are truly grateful for their dedication to sharing their knowledge and experiences with the next generation of scientists and explorers.

In addition, we would like to thank our 6th grade teacher, Ms. Britney Summers, for organizing this event with her husband, Major Aaron Summers: Space Force. Your commitment to inspiring our future leaders is what makes Fairview an amazing place to be!
