Fairview Elementary School recently joined millions of students worldwide in celebrating Computer Science Education Week (December 9-15, 2024) by participating in "Hour of Code." During this week, students at Fairview explored the exciting world of computer programming through a variety of engaging activities.

Students had the opportunity to:

  • Compose Code with Music: In a unique twist, students learned to code by creating their own musical compositions using popular songs. Using specialized software from Amazon Music's Music Lab: Jam Session, students experimented with different notes, rhythms, and instruments, transforming their musical ideas into lines of code.

  • Build a "Flappy Bird" Game: A classic coding challenge, students were tasked with creating their own version of the popular mobile game "Flappy Bird." This activity introduced them to the fundamental concepts of game development, including object movement, collision detection, and scoring.

  • Code with Lyla and Stu: Based on the beloved PBS Kids show, students engaged with interactive coding activities featuring the characters Lyla and Stu. These activities playfully introduced coding concepts while encouraging creativity and problem-solving skills. Students were able to customize characters, backgrounds, music, and so much more using drag and drop coding!

"Hour of Code" at Fairview Elementary was a resounding success, sparking students' curiosity and enthusiasm for computer science. Many students continued their coding projects beyond the classroom and shared their code with classmates and teachers. By providing hands-on experiences with coding, the school aims to empower the next generation of engineers and computer scientists!
