A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

As we begin planning for the next school year, one of our most challenging tasks is creating class groupings. It is very important to have balanced classes that reflect the diversity and needs of our students. As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships.

We welcome any information you believe is relevant to your child’s placement for the upcoming year. Please take a moment to complete this form by Friday, May 24. If you don't have specific information to share, there's no need to complete the form. Instead of requesting a specific teacher, kindly describe the ideal learning environment for your child. Please remember to fill out this form annually, as previous requests won't be carried over

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

Principal

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

SOL Testing-May

Students in grades 3-6 will be participating in Spring SOLs in the month of May. Please mark your calendars! If you know you will be out of town for any of the days your child is scheduled to test, please reach out to their classroom teacher, or Meghan Ehrman [email protected] to make alternate plans. If you have specific questions regarding the SOL assessments, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher.

We are thrilled to share that the James W. Robinson Symphonic Band has been invited to perform at the 78th Annual Midwest Clinic in Chicago, IL this December. Several of our former Fairview students are a part of this honor. The Midwest Clinic is a prestigious international event, attracting hundreds of applications from ensembles around the world. Applications and recordings are rigorously assessed by a panel of renowned musicians from the collegiate and professional band world who choose only a select few to perform for the Clinic’s 18,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 40 countries. We are deeply honored and excited for this once in a lifetime opportunity for our students and community. The Robinson Secondary Band program has long been recognized as one of the strongest in the nation. The Robinson Middle School Symphonic Band appeared at the Midwest Clinic twice under the direction of Linda Gammon in 1993 and 2000, and the Robinson High School Symphonic Band performed in 1994 under the direction of Stan Schoonover. We are so pleased to be able to continue this tradition of excellence in 2024 under the direction of Andrew Loft and Katie Dever as the first Virginia high school band to perform at the Midwest Clinic since 2006. We are so proud of the 2023-2024 ensemble for earning this honor. Thank you to our 2024 seniors for your leadership and outstanding musical contributions, particularly in your performances at the Virginia Music Educators Conference and the Music For All National Festival this year. We hope to make you proud and honor your dedication as we prepare for Chicago. We also want to thank and recognize our incredible elementary and middle school colleagues, clinicians, private lessons teachers, administration and amazing parents for supporting us on this journey. We will continue to make you proud. With Pride!!! https://www.robinsonband.org/news The Midwest Clinic

April has been a whirlwind of activity for our students and teachers, but amidst the end-of-month rush, a highlight emerged! It's always a thrill to see our incredibly talented students showcase their abilities on stage!

Mark your calendars! This fall, Fairview celebrates a remarkable milestone – 125 years of serving our community! To commemorate this historic occasion, we're planning a series of exciting events in early October. Stay tuned for details!

Participants may also join online sessions, which will provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Visit the Family Summit webpage to learn about the guest speakers and to register for the event. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

I hope you have enjoyed this beautiful weekend. Our students and staff are thrilled about the solar eclipse that is set to grace our skies tomorrow. This rare celestial event presents a wonderful opportunity for our students to witness the marvels of our universe. We encourage everyone to take proper precautions while observing this phenomenon and to embrace the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. We are grateful for the National Science Foundation who donated 800 pairs of glasses to our school.

I want to extend my gratitude to Mrs. Valentine, our Librarian, and all the dedicated volunteers who contributed to the success of our recent book fair night. Your hard work and commitment to promoting literacy within our school community are truly commendable.

Furthermore, a big thank you goes out to the PTA for organizing a fantastic event last Friday night. Your efforts in creating enjoyable experiences for our students and families are invaluable.

Make sure to read this week's newsletter which includes the last day for yearbook orders and our parent sign up for Field Day!

🏫 Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Check out the Budget Calendar for important dates in the budget process as well as opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

Lexia Parent Night

Attend a virtual information night to learn about Lexia on Tuesday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. Participants will discover how FCPS is integrating this program into the classroom to support student literacy growth. Tips for supporting students at home will also be shared. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Solar Eclipse on April 8th

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

In each classroom, Fairview will be livestreaming the eclipse from the  NASA website during maximum eclipse time.

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

It is hard to believe that Spring Break is just one week away and we are at the end of the third quarter of the school year! Our Falcons have been busy learning and growing! This week during our Falcon Focus lessons, our students will learn about positive self talk. Here are some questions you can ask your child:

  1. Did you use any positive self talk this week?
  2. When did you use it? How did you change a negative thought into a positive one?
  3. What examples do you have from using these strategies at home this week?

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

Principal

🌷 March 25-29 is spring break. Schools and school offices will be closed. We wish our students and teachers a happy and restful Spring Break!

Updated Covid Guidelines

Students who have symptoms of, tested positive for, or have been diagnosed with respiratory viruses (RSV, influenza, COVID-19)

  • FCPS will align guidance with recommendations by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).
  • Students may return when:
    • Student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND
    • Student’s symptoms have improved or resolved
    • Student should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.
    • Note: If your student did not have symptoms at time of testing and remains symptom free, they may return to school immediately using the additional precautions as noted above.

Opioid Conversation

🎤 Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Monday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

Immunizations Clinics

🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.

Sign Up for FCPS Summer Camps

Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools.

Tech Adventure Camp is available for current grade K-5 students to explore STEAM, culinary, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for elementary students who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Visit the E-IFTA webpage to register.

Budget

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

Bipartisan Study Finds Virginia Public School Divisions Receive Less Funding per Student Than Other States

The School Board recently adopted FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget. Meeting budget needs becomes more of a challenge with underfunding by the state, using staffing formulas that continue to result in school districts not receiving the actual support needed for excellent public education. A staffing formula is the method for calculating the number of positions that need to be assigned to meet program needs.

Did You Know?

In July 2023, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) released a study of Virginia’s K-12 funding formulas. The report found that Virginia school divisions receive less funding per student than the 50-state average, the regional average, and many of Virginia’s neighboring states including West Virginia, Maryland, and Kentucky. Learn more about the JLARC study. View FCPS’ budget development timeline

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you all in high spirits after what we hope was a fantastic week for you and your families! As we adjust to the shift in time brought on by daylight savings, we trust that the extra hour of daylight will be  a welcome change for everyone.

This week, our Falcon Focus lessons will discuss how students might experience stress. Students will learn the following:

Stress is what we feel when we’re worried or uncomfortable about something.

This worry in our mind can make our bodies feel bad.

This worry can also make us feel angry, frustrated, or scared, which can give us a stomach ache or a headache. It can make our muscles tighten up.

Pictured below are a few strategies that will be taught to students to help manage stress.

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

Principal

FCPS News/Information and Events Take the Family Engagement Survey!

FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey is now open. Survey partner K12 Insight emailed a link to families on March 3 and again on March 6. Please participate! Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS practices to best support our students.

The survey is available in 10 languages. All responses are confidential. Parents/caregivers may stop by the front office to fill out a paper survey or complete the survey online. Please check your email for the survey invitation or use this survey link. Get more information on the Family Engagement Survey webpage.

Fairfax County Science and Engineering Fair Open House

Members of the general public are invited to attend the science fair open house at Robinson Secondary School on Sunday, March 17, 1-3 p.m.

Sign Up for FCPS Summer Camps

Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

Welcome to the first week of March! It's incredible how quickly time flies, and I'm thrilled to see the energy and excitement within our school community as we embrace the arrival of spring. This spring, our students will have the opportunity to embark on enriching field trips tailored to their grade levels. These outings provide valuable hands-on learning experiences that complement classroom instruction and foster a deeper understanding of various subjects. We are grateful for the support of our PTA to assist in funding transportation costs.

This week, our Falcon Focus lessons will focus on Self Management: What to do with Anger.

We will  be guiding students to understand and manage their emotions, particularly focusing on anger. It's essential for children to recognize that no emotions are inherently "bad" – what we feel is simply what we feel. By helping our students understand how they're feeling and providing them with tools to navigate those emotions, we empower them to make healthier choices in challenging situations.

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

Principal

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

This week, we are excited to partner with our PTA to host our Heritage Night and student art show. We hope to see all of our families there!

The Falcon Focus lesson scheduled for the week of February 19th will delve into the concept of Upstairs Brain/Downstairs Brain. The "upstairs brain" refers to the region responsible for functions such as thinking, logic, reasoning, and self-control. On the other hand, the "downstairs brain" serves as our reactive center, triggering responses like flight, fight, or freeze when faced with challenging situations. When individuals find themselves in the grip of intense emotions that activate their downstairs brain, they may struggle with problem-solving and reasoning abilities.

I encourage you to take a moment to chat with your child about some of the strategies they have learned over the past few weeks. These strategies can be invaluable in helping them navigate their emotions and responses effectively

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

ZEN Lunch is an opportunity for students to eat in a calm quiet separate space away from the cafeteria. Students enjoy low lighting and calming music or videos (like the panda cam when that was a thing!). We will be able to continue offering this as an option as possible based on our staffing. We are asking for some support in helping us keep this going and consistently available for students. We are looking for parents that are willing to come to help us host Zen lunch on a consistent schedule, whether it be weekly on certain days, biweekly on a specific day or otherwise. This would require a volunteer to be badged through FCPS. If you are interested, please reach out to Lindsey Wilcox ([email protected]) in the main office for more information regarding badging and to discuss scheduling. Thank you for your consideration!

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

What an exciting milestone we've reached this week - 100 Days of School! It's been an amazing journey so far, filled with so much growth and learning for our students.

Our classrooms were buzzing with activity as our students dove into various fun-filled activities to mark this special occasion. From creative projects to interactive games, they really got into the spirit of the 100th day, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved.

As we continue to nurture a culture of kindness and compassion in our school, the week of February 14th – 20th is Random Acts of Kindness Week and accordingly the Falcon Focus lesson for the week focuses on Kindness to Self.  Kindness to Self supports children in building resiliency, asking for help and learning that it’s okay to make mistakes (growth mindset).

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

Principal

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize. Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

It's hard to believe we have entered the third quarter of the school year! This week during our Falcon Focus lesson, our students will be learning about being a good communicator by using a social filter.  Students will learn about how just like an air filter separates dust from our air at home, a social filter helps us to separate the stuff we think about saying, from the stuff we should say, or what is appropriate to say.

Instead of filtering out dust and dirt, our social filter filters out unkind, hurtful or unnecessary thoughts and words.

We encourage you to talk to your child about what they are learning in Morning Meetings and continue to practice these skills at home.

We are confident that the Falcon Focus lessons will be a valuable addition to our classroom instruction and a positive step forward in supporting the whole child. We look forward to sharing this journey with you!

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

We're excited to announce the launch of a new initiative in our classrooms that will take place during our morning meetings. On Mondays and Fridays of each week all classes at Fairview will participate in Falcon Focus lessons.  These engaging and interactive lessons will be held at the beginning of each school day and will support the development of essential social and life skills in our students.

The topic for this week is learning about self awareness:

What helps you, when you feel big, overwhelming emotions?

  • Breathing exercises?
  • Talking it out with someone you trust?
  • Exercise?
  • Time alone?
  • Drawing, reading, doodling, journaling?
  • Taking a break in the Calm Corner?
  • Something else

We encourage you to talk to your child about what they are learning in Morning Meetings and continue to practice these skills at home.

We are confident that the Falcon Focus lessons will be a valuable addition to our classroom instruction and a positive step forward in supporting the whole child. We look forward to sharing this journey with you!

A Message from Principal Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

It's hard to believe we are already at the end of the second quarter of the school year! In classrooms  throughout our school, our dedicated educators have been working tirelessly to create dynamic and enriching learning experiences. We believe in nurturing not only academic excellence but also the holistic development of each student. It's amazing to witness the enthusiasm and commitment our teachers bring to the classroom every day.

As we approach the halfway point of the academic year, I encourage both students and parents to take a moment to celebrate these achievements. Every milestone, big or small, contributes to the collective success of our school community.

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

Principal

Call for Volunteers to Support ZEN Lunch

Beginning last year, Fairview has been able to offer ZEN Lunch to students in grades 4-6 on at least 3 days weekly.

Technology Class

A BIG thank you to our Fairview community for collecting and sending in recycled materials for our Technology class. We are off to a great start! We will be starting these class group projects using the recycled materials very soon. We still need some items for these projects. If you would please collect and save some of these items and bring them to school, we would greatly appreciate your help. We will have collection bins placed in classrooms for these materials and at the entrance of the school by the office. Thank you for all your help. These are the only items we still need help gathering:

Bottle Caps

Paper Towel Holders

Toilet Paper Holders

THANK YOU!!!

Lost and Found

Our lost and found is very full! Do you recognize any of these items? We have wonderful PTA volunteers who tag and hang these items up. Please remind your child to stop by the lost and found on their way to lunch!  After a period of time, these items are donated.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Visit FCPS’ website for more information.
