Welcome, Principal Van Aalst!

Dear Fairview Elementary School Community,

The Region 4 Office is pleased to announce that Ms. Sara Van Aalst, currently an assistant principal at Willow Springs Elementary School, has been named the new principal of Fairview Elementary School.  Her official start date will be January 28, 2019.

Ms. Van Aalst brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Fairview Elementary School.  She began her Fairfax County Public Schools career as a teacher in 2000, teaching second, fifth, and sixth grades, as well as serving as an after-school remediation and Jump Start Coordinator.  In 2010, Ms. Van Aalst was appointed assistant principal, serving at Laurel Ridge Elementary School, Bull Run Elementary School, and Willow Springs Elementary School.  Among her accomplishments while serving as an assistant principal at Laurel Ridge, she initiated a mentor program between staff and identified students, and designed and implemented a master schedule in collaboration with specialists and classroom teachers.  At Bull Run, she developed and opened a Family Resource Center in collaboration with the Office of Communication and Community Relations, chaired the school improvement plan, and collaborated with Special Services, Procedural Support, and Special Education teachers to implement specialized reading programs aligned with student needs.  She teamed with county STEAM Resource Teachers, collaborated with Procedural Support to provide professional development for Special Education Teachers in the areas of understanding and developing effective IEPs while serving at Willow Springs.

Ms. Van Aalst is a strong instructional leader who believes in promoting best practices for teaching and learning.  She builds relationships with staff, students, parents and community members.  

Ms. Van Aalst earned her Bachelor of Arts at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and her Master of Arts at George Mason University.  Throughout her tenure with FCPS, she remained abreast of the latest trends in education and teacher leadership by attending workshops and becoming well rounded in all aspects of best practice instruction.
